Extra power for Nikon SB-28

Post by FarmerDan »

Recently I decided to put to use 6v Lithium rechargeable batteries purchased to operate Camtraptions Z1 strobes. I found Z1 did not last nearly as long as 4AA's in a Nikon SB-28 strobe with the auxillary power pack, Nikon SD-8, so I reverted to the SB-28's and had the 6v 6Ah lithium rechargeables so decided to boost the SB-28's power. A bunch of AA dummy batteries were accumulated from prior projects, so I went to Google Search and looked for how-to's to configure the dummies with the correct + and - wiring. I found a few, but all had left out critical information such as which of the flash's contacts were wired, or the url's for photos were no longer active. Thus, here is a solution. One type of dummy battery had both + and - poles wired, I first cut off the appropriate wire that was not needed. Note the black negative wire attached to the negative pole of the dummy AA, and positive, red wire goes to the positive pole. The negative wire goes in the top battery slot with the negative pole down. The positive wire goes to the 4th, lowest slot with the positive pole down. A notch was filed into the end of the battery compartment door for the wires. Do not mix positive and negative contacts up up and risk destroying your strobe. I made this system with used and left-over parts so it is not elegant, but is functional. I made others using wooden dowels and steel screws (not shown).
