Hi Everyone!

I am a Dutchie living in Kenia and have been using regular trail cameras for the last 3 years. The excitement of retrieving the camera and seeying whats on it after being out in the bush for a few weeks is what made me love this hobby!

So now, after three years I think it's time for something new! Animals around here are very skittsh and using low-glo trail cams they often get spooked. Also I am mostly interested in night time video. So I am wanting to build my own setup that can video in HD & IR, record sound & and uses 950nm IRs for lighting up the frame. I've been using a lot of cheaper models trailcams (theft is a big issue here) and I am always a bit disappointed by the amount of light in the frame. I would like to evenly light up the frame so that everything becomes clear & visible.

So far I've only got an idea but I am looking for some support on where to look and start! I've got some old Action cams (GoPro H3 & SJcam 4000) and I have an old Arduino Uno lying around. So I was thinking I might be able to combine those together and build a cool setup. I can't however find any similar builds or tutorials on how to do this. Is that because this combination doesn't make sense?

Anyway, I would be very keen on idea's on how I can do a 'cheap' build that allows me to film HD & IR. Even if this means not to use the action cams/arduino. Looking for a project that is not too difficult to start with and which I can improve once I get to understand all the parts a bit better.

Looking forward to some ideas!

Thanks in advance,
Kiko

P.s.
I am in the process of uploading some videos to youtube, I'll share a link once these are ready, so you guys have an idea what I am talking about ;)

Hi and welcome. Are you referring to Kenya the country in S.E. Africa or Kenai in Alaska?
It would be great to make a trailcam as you describe, l will stay tuned if anyone has any suggestions.

Wauw sorry guys for this late response! Plans got a bit mixed up with this Corona going on!

I am indeed talking about Kenya, the country in East-Africa. I've been working on a fairly large cattle ranch for the last 7 years and been putting out some Trail cameras for the last +-2. Always a great excitement but sadly been disappointed a couple of times when the cameras had been stolen.

I had planned to pick up all the parts I needed early April as I was traveling to Holland but again, due to corona I had to change my plans. So no progress so far but still very keen on some input on idea's!

Thanks a lot!

cheers,
Kiko
